The incident began on the evening of Good Friday, in the year 1991, March 29, when William, who was 30 years old, was in a bar (named as Au Bar) in Palm Beach, Florida, with his uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, and also with his cousin Patrick J. Kennedy.
There William met Patricia Bowman, a 29-year-old woman, and another young woman at the same bar.
According to a police affidavit by investigating police officers who actually interviewed Bowman, William asked the woman for a ride back to a nearby house owned by the Kennedy family.
William and Bowman then walked along the beach together. Bowman told police that William then violently raped her.
At about 4:00 am, then she called her other two friends who retrieved her from the Kennedy compound and took her first to their house and then to her own house, where Bowman called a rape crisis center.
After a few hours later she reported the incident to the police and then was taken to the hospital for a rape kit examination, which actually documented sperm in her vagina, complaints of severe pain, and bruising.
At trial, William said that he and Bowman did engage in sex, but it had been consensual.
Although the other three women, which included a law student and a medical student, were willing to testify that William had sexually assaulted them in incidents in the 1980s that incident was not reported to the police.
Their testimony was excluded because the pattern of their behavior was not reported as similar enough in its details to the Bowman case.
William was then acquitted of all charges. It took the jury just less than 75 minutes to reach a not guilty verdict.
2004 civil action

William denied all her charges, calling them “despicable” and saying that “family and personal history have made me unusually weak to these kinds of charges”. William later resigned from the CIR.
A spokesman from his founded organization, later on, acknowledged that the two separate federal sexual harassment claims were “settled amicably which were charged by former female employees of CIR,”
In the year 2005, January 5, the court then dismissed the employee’s lawsuit.
