Sturgill Simpson was born on June 8, 1978, in Jackson, Kentucky, United States. He moved to Versailles, outside Lexington with his family due to his father’s work.

In seventh grade, his parents divorced and during high school, he experimented with LSD and sold drugs.

John was enlisted in the United States Navy in his senior year, worked in the Combat Information Center of a frigate, spent some time in Japan, lived in Everett, Seattle, Washington where he waited tables at IHOP, and then moved back to his home at Lexington, Kentucky.

In 2004, John Sturgill Simpson formed a Country/Rock band named Sunday Valley. The band performed at the Pickathon Festival in Portland, Oregon.

But he was not pursuing a music career rather focusing on building a career at a Salt Lake City railroad freight-shipping yard for Union Pacific Railroad.

He succeeded at managing Union Pacific Railroad but his wife and friends convinced him to focus on songwriting and building a potential music career.

Simpson started playing on local open mics and gigs, toured and made albums with Sunday Valley and in 2012 he moved to Nashville with his wife when the group disbanded.

Third Album and Grammy Nomination

Simpson’s third album was A Sailor’s Guide to Earth released on April 15, 2016, and its first track was “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)” which has been described as heartfelt.

A Sailor’s Guide to Earth was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards produced by Sturgill himself.

After Grammy nominations, Simpson started touring and also helped produce Tyler Childers’ 2017 album Purgatory.

On September 27, 2019, Simpson released his fourth album Sound and Fury, released his first bluegrass album, titled Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1: The Butcher Shoppe Sessions on October 16, 202.0, and released Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 2 on December 11, 2020.

Sturgill Simpson has debuted an acting career in the indie film Orca Park in 2011. He has appeared in Black Hog Gut in 2018, in  CBS All Access television series One Dollar in several episodes.

Along with that in the theme song of the horror-comedy movie The Dead Don’t Die as “Sturgill Zombie”, in the movie Queen & Slim as a police officer, in the horror movie The Hunt, and as a supporting role in the drama film Materna.
