John was enlisted in the United States Navy in his senior year, worked in the Combat Information Center of a frigate, spent some time in Japan, lived in Everett, Seattle, Washington where he waited tables at IHOP, and then moved back to his home at Lexington, Kentucky.

In 2004, John Sturgill Simpson formed a Country/Rock band named Sunday Valley. The band performed at the Pickathon Festival in Portland, Oregon.
But he was not pursuing a music career rather focusing on building a career at a Salt Lake City railroad freight-shipping yard for Union Pacific Railroad.
He succeeded at managing Union Pacific Railroad but his wife and friends convinced him to focus on songwriting and building a potential music career.
Simpson started playing on local open mics and gigs, toured and made albums with Sunday Valley and in 2012 he moved to Nashville with his wife when the group disbanded.
