During the six weeks before production, Gillespie and Madison Reyes co-wrote “Perfect Harmony” at the cast members’ boot camp.

They were inspired by Gabriella and Troy’s [Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron] rooftop moment in High School Musical.

Between rehearsals, Reyes and Gillespie, who were only known to the duo Joyner and Shada, worked on the song.

Ortega, their music team, and the showrunners (Dan Cross and David Hoge) all loved the album, so they brought it to the studio to get it accepted for inclusion in the show.

Originally, the scene would have consisted of a background track that the production team would have had to create, and it would have been significantly shorter than the one in the show.
